At long last, a transaction has closed. You’ve handed over the keys to your happy client, and you look forward to the paycheck. But most agents know that care of the client after closing can help build lifelong real estate relationships.

Here are six ways to stay top of mind with past clients in the weeks and months after closing:

  1. Do the immediate follow-up – Be sure signage and/or a lockbox left behind are removed, and that the new home is move-in ready. If the client had questions or concerns at closing, address them as quickly as possible.
  2. Recommend needed contractors – Does your client need a moving service? A painter? Carpet cleaning? Remodeling? Savvy agents maintain a list of trusted providers they can recommend with confidence.
  3. Ask for referrals in a timely manner – It’s smart not to wait until after closing to ask for those all-important referrals. Asking when their bid is accepted, when their present home is sold or at any other up-time during the transaction will likely get results.
  4. Stop by on moving day – It’s a busy day, so make it brief, but ask if there is anything they need, or drop by later in the day with a pizza and some paper plates.
  5. Make the closing gift count – A set of monogrammed wine glasses is not for everyone. Pay attention to the client’s lifestyle. A handsome welcome mat, a gift card to a local restaurant or home store, or a gift basket filled with local specialties are all good alternatives.
  6. Host community events – Whether it’s an annual barbecue, a charity food drive, a golf tournament or a visit with Santa, being involved in community events is a great way to bring neighbors together, show you care and strengthen client relationships.
